Florence Area Humane Society: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
We began the program on March 9, 2024, and while the news of the Kia Pet Adoption grant from the Petfinder Foundation providing for "free adoptions" took a bit of time to circulate to the public, once the news got out, adoption rates picked up. FAHS extended the free adoptions (although funds had been exhausted before the end of the first month) and saw a 25% increase from the prior year in overall adoptions during the two months that followed.
Because of this success rate, the free adoptions have continued. This helped to free up an already overpopulated shelter, thus reducing the costs of the burden of care for our animals!
How many pets did this grant help?
This grant helped 10 dogs and 18 cats get adopted. As mentioned, the free adoption success has continued, thus helping even more animals get adopted!
Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.
Lamb is a Chihuahua, and while she was originally adopted a short time ago by a woman into her loving home, Lamb found herself back at the shelter. The woman who had adopted Lamb found out that her cancer had come back and she would have to be out of state to get treatment and could no longer care for Lamb.
But it doesn’t end there! In walks a woman who had just lost her own Chihuahua of 20 years and was looking for another. She adopted Lamb and brought her home to her husband. Her husband, still grieving the loss of their own sweet Chihuahua, was greeted by Lamb when she ran up to him and jumped in his lap like a long-lost love!
Lamb has now been renamed Sissy and travels with the husband everywhere. His heart is mending thanks to the absolutely perfect match and the love this dog has brought back into their lives.
The Petfinder Foundation Kia Pet Adoption Grant made the adoption easier, and added a blessing to their lives in finding another Chihuahua!
