Tri-County Animal Shelter: KONG Toys Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The Kong Toy Grant is a huge help to our shelter and the pets in our care. It allows us to provide safe, durable toys that keep our animals mentally and physically engaged. These toys are great for reducing stress and anxiety, especially for pets adjusting to life in a shelter. They also help with training and offer a fun, positive way for dogs to burn off energy. For us, this grant means we can give the animals the best care without taking away from other important needs, such as food and medical care. Ultimately, it makes the shelter environment more comfortable and enjoyable for the pets while they wait to find their forever homes.

Opie’s story started in a place of confusion and fear. When he and his siblings were brought to the shelter at a young age, they were still adjusting to life away from their home. The transition was hard for Opie — he was stressed, unsure of his new surroundings, and didn’t quite know what to think about the shelter environment. Everything was different, and it took some time for him to feel comfortable.

But with patience and a lot of love, Opie slowly began to trust. Our director spent a lot of time with him, offering reassurance and guidance. And little by little, Opie started to relax. It wasn’t an overnight change but, over time, the shelter became a place where he felt safe and cared for.

One thing that really helped Opie during his more anxious moments was the Kong toys. These toys became a comforting distraction, helping him manage stress and giving him something positive to focus on. Even now, Opie still loves his Kong toys — they’ve been a lifesaver in calming him down and keeping his mind at ease.

As the bond between Opie and our director grew stronger, it was clear that something special was happening. That trust they built together led to a beautiful moment — our director decided to adopt Opie. Today, Opie has a wonderful new brother named Jack, and the two of them are making the most of their days together.

Opie’s journey reminds us that with a little time, a lot of love, and the right support, even the most anxious pups can learn to trust again. We’re so happy to see Opie thriving in his forever home and can’t wait to see all the wonderful adventures he and Jack will have in the future.
