Save Our Scruff Rehome & Rescue: Purina Canada Happy Paws & Hearts Operation Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
The Purina Canada Happy Paws & Hearts Operation Grant directly supported the important work we do in partnership with the City of Hamilton Animal Services (HAS) to save the lives of dogs.
Sadly, due to space limitations, this municipal shelter routinely euthanizes unclaimed dogs in order to make room for incoming animals. These are often adoptable dogs who are simply struggling with living in a shelter environment and become distressed by the experience, often turning to self-harm or other negative behaviors. We bring these dogs into our care using our network of volunteer fosters, provide any necessary medical treatment, and find them loving, forever homes.
In order to continue this life-saving work, we need financial support to cover the basic veterinary needs and supplies required by each dog. These costs typically include a veterinary intake examination, standard vaccines and tests, a microchip, and a spay or neuter operation. Fortunately, the grant from Purina Canada helped by covering essential costs for seven dogs from the shelter.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.
The Purina Canada Happy Paws & Hearts Operation Grant helped us give seven very special dogs the fresh start they deserved. In mid-June, a group of chihuahuas – ranging in age from seniors to tiny nursing puppies – came into our care after being brought to a local shelter. The shelter was overcrowded, and these little ones needed help.
The group included Chico and Rosa, sweet 12-year-old seniors; Sadie and Chanel, both around 7 years old; Levi, just a few months old and full of curiosity; and Pedro and Pascal, 8-week-old puppies still being nursed by their mom, Rosa, at the time of rescue.
Thanks to the grant, we were able to cover most of their veterinary care and successfully place each one into a loving adoptive home.
