How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The $5,000 grant was used to help offset some of the costs of the 269 underage kittens taken into our foster program in the fourth quarter of 2013. We fostered a total of 1,326 kittens for the full year, 2013 at a total cost of approximately $179,000.

We could not have saved as many underage kittens as we did in 2013 (334 more than the previous year at the same time) without this support. We provide foster parents with food, litter and supplies and provide the kittens with their vaccinations and medical exams (and treatments) until they are adopted.

This year, The Arizona Animal Welfare League bravely signed on for the intake of 350 additional kittens through our foster program to do our part for the Alliance for Companion Animal’s Fix Adopt.Save. Campaign. rnrnTwo of the 1,326 kittens we took into our Foster program this year had hind leg deformities, but were perfectly healthy in every other way. They were just as mobile as their litter mates. However, we soon discovered that one of them, Ashley, was growing some kind of callous that was making her play a lot less. It turned out that her leg had a bone sticking out of it that caused pain and had a big scab built up over it if she ran around on it too much. Our Veterinarian was able to remove the bone and Ashley was back to being a playful kitten the very next day. She healed at a foster home for a few weeks and finally went up for adoption where she soon found her new forever home.rn
