Good Shepherd Humane Society: A Shot at Life Vaccination Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

We received feline vaccines, which have been used to update our cat care and keep cats from developing viruses.

By receiving these vaccines, we were also able to purchase feline bordetella vaccine and thus significantly reduce our incidence of respiratory infections in cats. A year ago, we had nearly every cat in the shelter with an upper respiratory--with improved vaccinations, we now only see one or two cats at any time with upper respiratory. rnThis grant has been a real boon to us, as cat and dog adoptions have lagged this year. The vaccines have enabled us to work on programs to build our adoption program and help cats find forever homes.

How many pets did this grant help?

approximately 80 felines

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

One of cats who benefited from our vaccines is Samantha. Samantha is about 14 years old and was surrendered to Good Shepherd because she had horrible fleas. The owners just wanted to euthanize her, but after discussion with us, agreed to let us keep her. She is healthy, and after treating her fleas, and quiet and calm cat. We have used our vaccine grant to provide her with boosters to keep her healthy while she is waiting for anew forever home.rnHolly is another cat who has benefited from our grant. Holly is our longest resident here at Good Shepherd, having come to us as a stray January 1, 2011. Grants like the vaccine grant allow us to treat and provide a home for these cats who otherwise might have to be euthanized.
