Straight Outta Rescue Society: Emergency Medical Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
The Emergency Medical Grant from the Petfinder Foundation provided critical financial support that allowed us to give Kumba, an elderly, severely neglected dog, the extensive medical treatment he desperately needed. Without this grant, it would have been incredibly difficult to fund the advanced veterinary care required to stabilize his health after nine years of neglect.
By easing the financial burden of Kumba’s care, the grant didn’t just help one dog, it helped many. It allowed us to allocate more of our limited resources to other animals in need, ensuring that more pets in crisis could receive timely support, veterinary attention, and a chance at a better life. This grant helped us stretch our capacity at a time when every dollar counts, making a meaningful impact beyond just one rescue story.

The grant directly helped Kumba, a senior dog who had endured nearly a decade of neglect. For nine long years, Kumba lived outside, chained in a yard with no shelter, no medical care, and little to no human affection. He had no choice but to survive on scraps, often chewing his chain or scavenging through rocks and debris for food, causing severe damage to his teeth in the process.
When we rescued Kumba, he was in rough shape, both physically and emotionally. It was clear he had likely never seen a veterinarian. He needed immediate care: vaccinations, parasite treatment, neutering, and diagnostic imaging that revealed significant health issues, including hip dysplasia, advanced arthritis, and a chronic ACL injury. Managing his pain and mobility became a priority. On top of that, he required major dental surgery, done over two days, to remove broken, decaying teeth that had caused him constant discomfort for years.
Thanks to the Emergency Medical Grant from the Petfinder Foundation, we were able to provide all of this life-changing care. The grant covered a portion of his medical expenses, allowing us to focus on helping him heal without the stress of how we would fund his treatment. Just as importantly, it gave Kumba the chance to finally experience what it means to be safe, loved, and cared for.
Kumba’s transformation was remarkable. As his pain subsided and his strength returned, his true personality began to shine. He became more trusting, more affectionate, and genuinely enjoyed the company of his foster family. He even began playing and exploring — things he’d never had the chance to do before.
And yes, Kumba was adopted! He now lives out his golden years in a warm, loving home where he is cherished every single day. He has a soft bed, good food, regular vet care, and most importantly, a family that adores him. The Emergency Medical Grant helped make this incredible transformation possible, giving Kumba not just a second chance, but the life he always deserved.
