Labs and More: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The Kia Pet Adoption Grant helped rescued dogs in our care find their forever home. Specifically, this grant allowed the organization to reduce its adoption fees in the range of $50-200, which resulted in a direct increase in the number of dogs adopted.

Adoption fees for our rescued dogs are generally $505 for adults and $605 for puppies, which in the past has represented a significant obstacle to forever families, especially lower- and middle-income community members. Although our adoption fees include up-to-date vaccinations, automatically registering the dog's microchip, neuter/spay, and any other medical needs from intake with us to date of adoption, they are a cost that many strong forever homes are not in a position to provide. The Kia Pet Adoption Grant made it possible for us to work with these families to ensure they got the dog of their dreams.

Labs and More is a stronger organization as a result of this grant. It has allowed us to expand to serve more dogs in need in our community. Specially, we have been able to provide medical care to homeless dogs and provide the support on their way to adoption and forever homes. We are extremely appreciative of Kia's support.

Our rescued dogs who are facing medical challenges are a core reason we founded the Labs and More rescue: To help them overcome their challenges on a path to adoption by their forever families.

One example is Trusty (first and second photos), a special gift who came to us in the fall of 2022. Young, playful, and ready to find his forever family was how Trusty arrived at Labs and More Rescue. At just 2 years of age, this boy had thought he had a great life ahead of him. He had no idea there was something seriously wrong until he found himself in a shelter.

He was left in the outside drop of a remote shelter, and when the staff arrived to bring him out that morning, he was covered in blood from a nosebleed that just wouldn’t stop. After days passed and shelter staffers were unable to determine the cause of his bleeding, he was placed in the kennel area for adoption.

Within a few days, the shelter knew this boy needed urgent care or they would have to euthanize him. Trusty had a rare bone-eating fungus that was eating away at his nasal cavity. A surgical procedure was used to remove large quantities of diseased tissue from Trusty’s nose and sinuses prior to treatment with anti-fungal medication.

All of Trusty’s medical care went exceedingly well, and Labs and More was able to assist Trusty on his path to his forever home. However, one significant obstacle remained when a perfect match for Trusty’s forever home did not have the funds for his adoption.

The Kia Pet Adoption Grant allowed the family and Trusty’s dream to come true! Trusty loves his new family and they have allowed this resilient boy to experience all the magic involved in being a loved family pet, including jogs on the beach and snowshoeing.
