Pets Lifeline: Dog Enrichment Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
Thanks to the generous support of this grant, Pets Lifeline was able to install a permanent shade structure in our dog yard — an essential improvement that has significantly enhanced the daily experience of both our shelter dogs and the staff and volunteers who care for them.
Prior to this addition, our ability to safely utilize the outdoor yard was compromised during the hotter months due to intense sun exposure. Temporary solutions like umbrellas and pop-up tents were unstable and ineffective, limiting critical activities such as playgroups, behavioral training, and adoption meet-and-greets. The new wooden gazebo provides consistent, reliable shade that allows us to use the space more fully year-round.
Importantly, the structure is also all-weather, which means handlers can now safely spend time in the yard even during rainy weather — especially important for the dogs who still want to play and engage outdoors despite the conditions. This flexibility ensures our enrichment and training programs are not disrupted by seasonal weather, supporting a consistent routine that improves both canine well-being and adoptability.
As a result, our dogs now benefit from increased time outdoors, improved socialization opportunities, and more frequent enrichment activities — all of which contribute to reduced stress, improved behavior, and greater adoptability. Additionally, our team can safely and comfortably conduct training and bonding sessions, which are vital for preparing dogs for their future homes.
This grant will directly improve the well-being of hundreds of shelter dogs and the humans working tirelessly on their behalf. It’s a lasting investment in the health, comfort, and adoptability of the animals in our care, and we are deeply grateful for your partnership in making it possible.

The photos show Frank, a brindle shepherd mix (first three photos), and Rico, a Chihuahua mix (fourth photo), enjoying the new shade in the dog yard. These are just two of the hundreds of dogs that we intake each year who will be able to enjoy playing in the shaded yard, even in the hottest summer months.
Both of these dogs were adopted from our shelter and then returned through no fault of their own. Rico’s family had just had a baby and decided that adding a dog was too much work. Frank, formerly Tigger due to his stripes, was returned because the adoptive family’s cat didn’t get along with him. Both are up for adoption through Pets Lifeline and their URLs on Petfinder are below.
