Pets Lifeline: Cat Enrichment Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

As those in the animal-care industry well know, enrichment is a vital component of animal welfare, especially in a shelter setting, where cats can experience stress and anxiety due to confinement and lack of stimulation.

Thanks to the Petfinder Foundation Cat Enrichment grant, we have been able to provide our shelter cats with their preferred enrichment toys, which include ripple rugs, wand toys, cat grass, and puzzle feeders.

By implementing this rich variety of enrichment toys, we have noticed a significant enhancement in the well-being and mental stimulation of our shelter cats. While we just began using the enrichment toys one month ago, we've seen an immediate increase in activity levels, as well as reduced stress and anxiety, improved socialization, enhanced mental stimulation, better physical health, and an overall improved quality of life.

With the grant funds, we have been able to create a more stimulating and enjoyable environment for our feline residents, ultimately making them happier and healthier while they await their forever homes.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Tommy (first photo) is a wonderful senior cat who has been with us since April and has shown signs of depression being here at the shelter for a while.

Having new enrichment items such as ripple rugs and new wand toys has really improved Tommy’s behavior. He used to ignore visitors, sitting at the door and not engaging with the public. Now, when visitors bring in his new favorite feather wand toy, he is eager to play with them! After a 10- to 15-minute play session, he will often cuddle up in his visitors’ laps, too.

We hope that Tommy will soon find his forever home, and we will send his favorite wand toy with him to help him acclimate to his new space.

Kid was one of three kittens surrendered to us in May this year and, despite being one of our most social and cuddly kittens, he had a hard time being adopted. He was adopted with his siblings in August, but unfortunately they were returned because one of the family members ended up being severely allergic to them. Suddenly, we found ourselves with a room full of black kittens, Kid included, waiting for their forever homes.

We used social media to post video footage of the cute, playful kittens enjoying their new ripple rug and wand toys, which caught an adopter’s eye and encouraged him to come into our shelter. This young man fell in love with Kid instantly when Kid snuggled up to him and stole his heart right away (second photo)! Kid was the kitten for him!

Simone (third photo) is an adorable kitty, but she can be quite shy with new people and doesn’t always come out from hiding. She’s always been playful, but when she got a new feather wand toy from our cat enrichment grant, she was so excited, hopping around for the feathers. She even chirped at it a little bit, excited to catch herself a little birdie! It was wonderful to see Simone open up more with visitors because of her excitement for these new feather wands. We are hopeful she will soon find her forever home thanks to being able to show her more playful side to adopters.

Meet Simone here.
