National Mill Dog Rescue: Senior Pet Adoption Assistance Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

We applied on May 19, 2023, for Murdock, a bichon frise who had been in our care for over a year at that point. Murdock was beyond fearful, cringing in the corners of his kennel whenever anyone stopped by. Our behavior team learned how to approach and pick him up so that he could be socialized. He also has serious health issues requiring expensive medication. As a result of his behavior issues and his health prognosis, he did not get visited or chosen by adopters.

The Petfinder Foundation Senior Pet Adoption Assistance grant was a part of several Facebook promotions and was also touted on his bio on our website.

In January 2024, after 20 months in our care, Murdock was adopted to his forever home. He had so many fans and friends at the shelter, as well as his foster caregiver. His adoption was a real morale booster and helped us all move forward. It also freed space for another deserving rescued puppy-mill survivor.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Here is Murdock’s adopter’s Facebook post: “My family and I are happy to welcome Murdock to our home. He is settling and becoming more comfortable each day. He has been taking over most of the dog beds in the house. His new brother and sister, Comet and Annie, are teaching him the ropes and he is finding his voice. We are so blessed to have him.” — Pam

While the Petfinder Foundation grant was not the full motivation for Pam, it certainly was a wonderful asset to accompany the adoption. She is thrilled to have this assistance with the cost of Murdock’s medications and any future vet visits.

Many, many thanks from Pam and from all of us at NMDR for boosting Murdock’s adoption chances with this generous grant.
