National Mill Dog Rescue: Emergency Medical Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
This grant allowed for the adoption and permanent placement of an 8-year-old rottweiler who came to us with limited hope for a life without severe mobility issues. Thanks to the funds provided, he was able to begin treatment for these issues. His foster mom determined that he was a member of the family and is now a permanent part of her home.

In April 2024, Charlie, an 8-year-old rottweiler, was rescued from a commercial breeding facility and brought to the National Mill Dog Rescue (NMDR) in Missouri for a fresh start. Having spent the first years of his life in a small outdoor pen with little veterinary care and limited interaction with other dogs, Charlie faced significant physical challenges, including poor muscle growth and limited mobility. Despite this, he was trusting and happy.
A veterinary examination revealed that Charlie required ongoing medical support to manage his condition and maintain his mobility. Beth Wellman, the Missouri shelter manager, took Charlie into her home as a foster while the rescue sought an adoptive family. Unfortunately, concerns over his long-term mobility led all potential adopters to back out.
During his time in foster care, Charlie bonded deeply with Beth and her other dogs, and she ultimately decided to make him a permanent member of her family. Charlie has become an “ambassador” for new foster dogs, providing comfort and support to other dogs in need, whether they’re young puppies or senior dogs. His calm and tolerant nature makes him a comforting presence in the household.
Charlie’s medical regimen includes Previcox ($122/month) and glucosamine/chondrotin supplements ($50/month), and now gabapentin ($25/month) has been added to reduce his pain. Petfinder Foundation grant money helped cover his initial medical expenses, including his medications.
Charlie is loved by his family, which includes several other rescued dogs, and he continues to live a happy, supported life. His adoption fee of $100 also helped support his care, and the grant has been invaluable in ensuring that he enjoys a life of comfort and love.
