Ark-Valley Humane Society: KONG Toys Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Kongs were used for enrichment of shelter dogs at Ark-Valley Humane Society in Buena Vista, Colorado.

Shelter dogs require daily enrichment to maintain a good quality of life and adoptability while in shelter care. This includes daily walks, group play time, and enrichment activities such as training and chewing. Kongs provide a wonderful activity for dogs that involves the senses, chewing, and the challenge of getting yummy food that is stuffed inside the Kong. With Kongs, dogs are happier and more adoptable because they keep the dogs from getting bored and keep them calmer.

How many pets did this grant help?

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Denzel is a very active dog. He came into our shelter months ago and needs lots of daily activities to keep him happy and well-behaved. When he gets bored, he will jump on people and get mouthy to get their attention. He will also destroy toys and eat them. Frozen Kongs are a great daily activity for Denzel. They are the one treat he can’t seem to destroy yet, and they keep him occupied for a good part of his afternoon while in his kennel. We hope that Denzel finds a home soon, and we’ll be sure to send his Kong home with him to increase the chances that he won’t eat anything he’s not supposed to in his new home.
