Happy Cats Haven: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

We have held two special adoption events offering discounts to potential adopters.

Our first is a running offer where the adoption of a second cat is half off, with special breeds being the only exclusion.

Our second event was the "Bring Home Love" adoption special throughout the month of June. We celebrated Adopt a Shelter Cat month all through June. All adults and "catolescents" had half-off adoption fees that month so they would go home for $50. That still included their spays or neuters, vaccinations, microchips, food and litter starter kits, and a free well-kitty checkup with one of our wonderful partner vets.

The 2024 Kia Pet Adoption Grant has helped Happy Cats Haven offset the cost of preparing felines for adoption and recoup the discounted fees for these special adoption events.

How many pets did this grant help?

Since receiving the Kia Pet Adoption Grant in April, Happy Cats Haven has taken in 73 cats who were returned by their owners for various reasons, 56 transfers, and 62 strays. During this time, we have had an average population in the shelter of 185 cats and kittens. Since receiving the 2024 Kia Pet Adoption Grant in April, Happy Cats Haven has been able to adopt out 110 felines.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Kazu and Zorro came from an abusive situation, so they have really earned their retirement with a loving family who gives them as much love as they deserve! Kazu is the brown tabby boy with the delicate build of his Oriental shorthair cousins, and Zorro (whose friends call him Pirate) is the plucky Persian-mix tuxedo with the debonair single eye.

They are both small cats, with Kazu only 8 lbs. and Zorro the size of a kitten at 5 lbs. In spite of their small stature, they both have big purrsonalities! These boys are completely bonded and helped each other survive their stressful lives with constant snuggling and grooming each other. They didn’t know how to play when they first came to their loving foster parents, but they’ve been gently taught that playtime is fun time. They even like to play tag with each other now and LOVE to be brushed!

Zorro is the party animal who meets everyone at the door, ready for pets and snuggles. He follows his people around like a puppy and loves to sit on the kitchen stool and supervise. He’s a sidecar cat who loves to snuggle up next to his humans and put his head on their laps. Zorro loves to share in Kazu’s wet food and, like a typical Persian, is happy to have a little help keeping his face clean so he can breathe better.

Kazu is the best snuggle bunny ever, ready for cuddles and lap time the second his humans sit down. He loves to help his family watch TV or read and will stretch out for a belly rub as soon as his favorite show starts. Kazu is much happier now that he’s had a dental to remove his painful teeth.

Kazu and Zorro were adopted together in June 2024 and are enjoying their twilight years in a loving home.
