Cat Depot: Disaster Response and Recovery Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The Petfinder Foundation helped us give cats rescued from the South Carolina floods the medical care they needed. Shelley Thayer, executive director of Cat Depot, says, "The Petfinder Foundation enabled us to take more cats than we typically would have been able to move through our system at the time of the disaster. Our budgets are predetermined at the beginning of the year, and although somewhat flexible, incoming cats – especially cats from disaster relief cases – are typically more medically expensive, putting a strain on our resources. This was the case for the South Carolina cats. The financial support we received allowed us to participate in the rescue effort and provide the necessary care these deserving cats needed. We are forever grateful to the Petfinder Foundation for helping us change the destiny of the South Carolina cats."

All of the cats arrived with medical issues, and the grant has helped us address the needs of each cat. Cats, staff, and volunteers are all grateful for your assistance.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Myrtle (first and second photos) came to Cat Depot with severe eye problems and Lexington (third photo) had an ulcer on her tongue, dental problems, and infections. By now, four out of the six cats have found loving furever homes. Myrtle and Lexington are the only ones still remaining at Cat Depot, still receiving care from our veterinarians.

Spartanburg (fourth photo) required medical care on arrival, just like the other cats from South Carolina. He made a quick recovery and turned into a healthy and playful kitty who would approach visitors to his pod, inviting them to interact with him. He was adopted on Christmas Eve and got to spend the holiday seasons in his forever home!
