Hawaii Island Humane Society: Stretch and Scratch Cat Scratchers Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Our grant was for Stretch and Scratch Cat Scratchers.

We are able to use them to keep the cats and kittens entertained while they were at the shelter. And then send them home as they are adopted to help ease the transition in their new home. This has proved to be a valuable enrichment tool and provides hours of entertainment for the kitties, staff and volunteer!

How many pets did this grant help?

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

A tiny helpless orphan kitten only 3 days old came into HIHS. Shortly after her arrival she went to a wonderful foster home and her new “foster mom” took excellent care of her with round the clock bottle feeding, warmth, love and safety. When she became old enough she was brought back to HIHS to be placed for adoption. We had no doubt that she would be adopted right away because she is so cute and used to constant human handling from a young age. Unfortunately the day she was adopted, Karma developed ring worm. So Karma went to the medical ward where she could be treated for her skin problems. During her treatment in the medical ward Karma fell in love with her personal cat scratcher that she would use all the time. She would play and purr all over her cat scratcher, and sometimes you would even find her perched up on it! Karma’s cat scratcher kept her very entertained during her long treatment process. We all have become very attached to her shining personality and cute antics. Thanks to our foster mom and the HIHS Second Chance Fund, Karma will soon go to her forever home!
