Almost Home Foundation stepped in when super-friendly Brooklyn, a 3-year-old, 5-lb. Chihuahua, was brought to the vet to be euthanized because she had stopped walking. The amazing veterinarian and his staff knew that something more could be done, but time was of the essence. A disc issue was suspected, so the vet donated the cost of an x-ray, which confirmed the issue was in her back. Although Brooklyn was unable to move, she was able to detect painful stimuli.
Brooklyn was transferred to a specialty vet and a MRI was performed. The MRI showed that Brooklyn’s spinal cord was being compressed and swollen. Immediate surgery was needed to remove the ruptured disc material and decompress the spinal cord at T12-13.
Brooklyn had her surgery and, six months later, has gone from not being able to move to being able to play with her foster siblings. She is also able to walk and run with them — no stairs yet, though. Her legs give out at times still if she does too much running, but her foster is doing physical therapy with her every day via videos. Brooklyn has not been adopted yet.
