Hendricks County Humane Society: Play Pet Beds Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

These beds were used for our dogs that were available for adoption. Our resident cat, Dave, loves lying on them. We have kept four in-house to use. Shortly after we first received the beds, a rescue called and needed to urgently use our building for a few hours on a Saturday. We placed these beds down for the dogs coming in temporarily. They did comfort them. We also had a dog, Aurora, who has since been adopted, who literally picked up her bed and took it to the door with her when she got adopted. She knew it was special and she was not going to leave it behind!

These P.L.A.Y. beds gave a sense of security to our canines who came in for adoption. Half were dogs older than one year, so they knew they were not at home anymore. Adding these beds to their kennels gave them something soft and comforting to retreat to. As stated above, we let a rescue use them for a few hours in their time of need. Six of our dogs who were adopted got to take their beds home, which assisted in their transitions.

How many pets did this grant help?

Including the rescue that used our building that day, 23 canines and one feline.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

HCHS got a call to assist a southern-Indiana humane society in a case where a momma boxer and her six pups were abandoned in a house for about a month. This specific humane society had just pulled dozens of animals from a hoarding case and needed help. HCHS went down and got Sasha and her pups. She was starved and suffering from malnutrition and dehydration. She was sacrificing herself to save her puppies. Sasha and pups came into our adoption program. She was slowly nursed back to health. In the first picture, you can see her ribs sticking out, and these P.L.A.Y. beds really came to the rescue for her and her babies. We are glad to report that Sasha is happy and healthy in her new fur-ever home as are all six pups.
