Happy Tails Animal Rescue: Emergency Medical Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
The Emergency Medical Grant from the Petfinder Foundation provided critical financial support that allowed our rescue to move forward with lifesaving medical treatment for Dan without delaying care due to cost concerns.
As a foster-based rescue, unexpected emergency medical expenses can place a significant strain on our limited resources and impact our ability to help other animals in need. This grant helped offset a portion of Dan's extensive veterinary expenses, including emergency surgery and treatment for post-operative complications.
By helping cover these costs, the grant allowed us to continue providing high-quality medical care to Dan while preserving resources needed for the many other dogs and cats in our program. Most importantly, it gave Dan the opportunity to recover, heal, and continue his journey toward finding a loving forever home. We are incredibly grateful for the Petfinder Foundation's support and commitment to helping animals with extraordinary medical needs.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.
Dan came to our rescue after being transferred from another organization due to paralysis in his hind legs. Veterinary evaluation revealed that he had previously been shot with a BB gun, causing a spinal injury that left him permanently paralyzed in both rear limbs and incontinent in both bowel and bladder.
Despite these challenges, Dan remained a happy, affectionate dog. Unfortunately, he began experiencing abnormal sensations in his paralyzed legs and repeatedly chewed at them, causing severe wounds that would not heal.
To relieve his suffering and prevent further injury, Dan underwent a medically necessary bilateral hind limb amputation. During his recovery, he developed a serious infection that required an emergency surgical procedure to clean and treat the affected area.
Thanks to the medical care he received and support from the Petfinder Foundation Emergency Medical Grant, Dan recovered from his surgeries and continues to thrive in foster care.
While he has not yet been adopted, he is doing well with his foster family and is patiently waiting for the right forever home. His resilience, joyful spirit, and determination continue to inspire everyone who meets him.
