Little Traverse Bay Humane Society: Disaster Response and Recovery Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

After a devastating ice storm, Little Traverse Bay Humane Society recognized the lasting impact it would have on our community. The storm left many families without power, shelter, or resources for over a week and, as a result, countless pets were in need of immediate assistance. This generous grant allowed us to support our community with pet food, supplies, microchips, veterinary evaluation, and temporary housing, free of charge.

The funds also allowed us to restock our Resource Room, which is open to pet owners in need during all our hours of operation (Monday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.). The Resource Room is stocked with pet food, leashes, collars, treats, toys, and more with no cost to the pet owner. The Resource Room is designed to be a judgement-free zone for individuals to "shop" in private, helping keep pets in their loving homes and prevent unnecessary surrenders.

How many pets did this grant help?

300

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

This grant helped so many pets in such a profound way: A tiny dog, congenitally blind and cold without heat, received a through veterinary exam a microchip, food, coats, and blankets to keep her and her owner warm.

A puppy, recently adopted by his owner, received a microchip, leash and collar, toys, socialization, and food in a time where she would have otherwise been isolated and without.

An outdoor kitty received a microchip and now has a way to find her way home if she becomes lost with all the surrounding damage to the community.

Most of all, families were given safe space to keep their pets while their homes had damage assessed and repaired, to visit and let their dogs run in a fenced area, and to find compassion and resources without judgement.
