Crash's Landing and Big Sid's Sanctuary: Sponsor a Pet Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The money was used for blood tests.

It helped us determine that Arendelle was very anemic, and we were then able to provide her with appropriate medical care. Thank you so much for making it possible for us to help this sweet little girl!

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Our founder and veterinarian, Dr. Jen Petrovich, writes all the bios for our cats. Here’s what she wrote about Arendelle: On New Year’s Day 2015, we received the following plea for help: “I know this is a long shot, but I live around the corner from your facility and last night when I was letting my dogs out, I heard a crying cat in my neighbor’s yard (most likely eating birdseed for food). She let me come to her, and when I picked her up, she was nothing but a skeleton. I don’t have any cats, and no supplies, so I ran to the grocery store at 11 p.m. last night to grab a litter box and a little food (she appears to be a younger cat) as I couldn’t, in good consciousness, let her sleep outside in the sub-zero temperatures. This morning, I found a small amount of poop on her fur and on my basement floor (she didn’t use the litter box) and her behind is red, raw and even a little bloody. I’m reaching out to you because it’s New Years Day and I don’t know what to do with her. I can’t keep her as I have two big dogs who are unfriendly towards cats. But I can’t let her back outside because she’s so skinny, she most likely won’t survive. She is so starved for attention and for food. I’m worried, and don’t know who else to turn to. I looked at your cat list online to see whom she most resembles (as I don’t know cat breeds) and she looks very similar to Piper. I believe she is a dilute tortoiseshell cat. I’ve checked Craigslist and found no listings for a missing cat, and my guess is that she has been alone on the streets now for a very long time, based on her current weight. Please let me know if you can assist me. I know it’s a holiday, but I feel desperate.”

Since I had been out the night before (hey now, that is a rare occurrence for me!) I didn’t receive the email from our intake director until the evening, but once I read it, I promptly called Kelly; she arranged for me to meet her neighbor within the hour to pick the kitty up. Once at her house, I was greeted by a diminutive little waif of a cat who was in dire need of medical intervention, as the combination of poor (if any!) diet, lack of water, minimal body fat to insulate her, and raging diarrhea were causing significant dehydration. Once at the clinic, I got lab work running and meds on board to try to counteract the loose stools, along with treatment for an eye infection, and discovered that she had not yet been spayed (she was born in the spring of 2013). Even though I could tell she felt pretty darn rotten, she purred and head-butted me to no end, so I packed her back up and took her home, where she spent the holiday weekend with my office kitties. Baby wipes and ointment to slather on her tender bum helped sooth her irritated skin, and endless bowls of food soon filled her belly, which in turn was plumping out nicely. After several days of giving her nursing care, I was able to spay her, and a week after her arrival I ended up administering liquid barium and injectable steroids to calm her massively inflamed bowels.

Thankfully, this combination of medications worked, and I was finally able to send her down to Crash’s to meet her fans, who had been patiently awaiting her arrival since I started posting about her on Facebook 🙂

Although I am quite biased when it comes to how I feel about my foster kitties, I have to say that the general volunteer consensus supports my diagnosis of terminal cuteness and melt-your-heart sweetness! Arendelle could not be more engaging or gentle, wanting nothing more than to be the recipient of your adoration and affection, reciprocating with eagerness and appreciation. It gives me chills to think for even a second of the cruel, cold, wintry fate she would have suffered had Kelly’s pups not had to piddle when they did, alerting Kelly to a creature in need. A HUGE thanks goes out to Arendelle’s rescuer for heeding the call of despair and sheltering this little one, keeping her safe and out of harm’s way. I am eternally grateful to Kelly for saving this little girl’s life!

Arendelle has been adopted!
