Delta Animal Shelter: KONG Toys Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

This Kong grant helped us replace many of our very well-used Kongs. Now all dogs in our care have a Kong to help them pass the days. They love their filled Kongs and they are so good for the dogs for enrichment while in the shelter setting.

We always encourage adopters to purchase a Kong for their adopted dog, as they are such a well-made, long-lasting product. Our dogs are so happy when they get their filled Kong and can enjoy chewing and eating the yummies put inside them.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Megan is a super sweet and goofy mastiff mix. She came to us as an owner-surrender as the other dogs in the home did not like her.

We all fell in love with her and her amazing personality right from the start. Megan was being prepped for her spay surgery and when they implanted her microchip, she started bleeding from the site, which is not a common occurrence at all. They then were placing her IV for the surgery and she got an immediate hematoma.

Due to these things, her spay surgery was cancelled and we started doing all kinds of testing. We found her blood platelet count was severely low. She was started on meds to help this and has had more testing to try to figure out why this is happening. We still do not know exactly, but it is thought to be some kind of autoimmune disorder.

Through all of this, we have tried to keep her her happy self with lots of enrichment. Her absolute favorite thing is when she receives her filled, frozen Kong. She even blows bubbles when chewing on it.

We were so happy to be able to give her a brand new Kong thanks to this wonderful grant. Megan will be with us for some time while we try to figure out her medical concerns, but we know she will be happy as long as she has her filled Kong.

You can meet Megan here.
