Animal Allies Humane Society: KONG Toys Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Animal Allies is dedicated to providing fast adoption services to every animal, but sometimes there are pets who tend to stick around the shelter a little longer than usual. Even for pets with short lengths of stay, every animal must receive the medical attention and care for basic needs that they require, but providing enrichment can be the difference between happiness and suffering at a shelter.

With the awarded KONG toys, our pets can receive treats like peanut butter, pumpkin puree, eggs, etc., while engaging their minds to help keep them sharp and content in a new and potentially chaotic place like a shelter.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Mama Marigold arrived at our shelter on April 1, 2026, and has been waiting for someone to take her home.

Having been rescued from both an abusive and an animal-hoarding household, Marigold was even a breeding dog and is estimated to have had anywhere between five and 10 litters in her short eight-year life.

Now that she, some of her puppies, and other former housemates are at the shelter, they’re settling in, but feel fear when alone and often need stimulation.

Thanks to the KONG grant, these dogs have access to KONGs to keep their minds, paws, and mouths occupied during their stays at the shelter. Now that the dogs are no longer fighting for food and resources, we’ve seen them take time to enjoy the treats in their KONG toys and relax in their safety at the shelter.
