Franklin County Humane Society: COVID-19 Operation Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

We purchased 30 cases of canned kitten food, five cases of cat broth and 40 lbs. of rawhide dog chews.

Due to the pandemic, we expanded our cat foster volunteer program. Our goal has been to get more cats and kittens out of the shelter and into foster homes. This helps keep our shelter staff and pets healthy by providing more space to socially distance in the facility. As our cat and kitten population has increased, we have had adoption opportunities cancelled. We needed more cat and kitten food to supply our foster families.

Pandemic regulations also mean that volunteers who help walk dogs have been restricted from our shelter. Our dogs needed additional resources for enrichment. Dog chews provide a great source of activity and stimulation for dogs who are in our kennels. They are also a great way for foster families to introduce foster dogs to other dogs in the family.

More than 35 cats and kittens and 25 dogs were helped by this grant.

Maple Syrup was a stray cat scrounging for food at a local compost pile with her three small kittens: Crepe, Flapjack and Waffle (first two photos). She was brought to our shelter and a foster family was found. Her foster mom reports that “Maple was an excellent mother and we loved watching those tiny babies grow into healthy, bouncing kittens.” The kitten food and broth bought with our Petfinder Foundation grant helped care for Maple Syrup and her kittens.

Dozer was placed into a foster family and his foster sister Bailey welcomed him eagerly because he arrived with new chews purchased with money from our Petfinder Foundation grant (third photo). Dozer has been adopted!
