Western NC Sheltie Rescue: Dog Enrichment Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

This grant enabled us to upgrade and replace core enrichment and care items that directly improve the daily lives of dogs in our program. Because we received the grant funds late in November, these items benefited eight of our rescues by the end of this year and at will help least seven more in the beginning of 2026. By providing safe, structured enrichment and comfort, we helped our rescues settle in more quickly, reduce stress behaviors, and support successful adoptions. This funding ensures that every dog in our care has quality items tailored to their needs while they wait for their forever homes.

How many pets did this grant help?

Eight pets were helped in 2025, with at least seven more to be helped in 2026.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Blue (first photo) is a gentle and loving 8-year-old blue merle Sheltie who came to us under heartbreaking circumstances: His dad passed away, and his mom recently moved into assisted living. When his extended family reached out for help, we welcomed Blue into rescue to ensure he would have the care, stability, and love he deserves.

Enrichment toys and cozy beds played an important role in helping Blue adjust. Soft snuffle toys, gentle puzzle feeders, and comfortable resting spots gave him structure, comfort, and security as he worked through grief and transitioned into his new chapter. These items helped him relax, rebuild confidence, and feel safe in a new environment.

Nyla (second photo) is a bright, playful girl who loves one-on-one attention. Thanks to the enrichment grant, she enjoys a soft new bed and interactive toys that help her relax and stay mentally engaged in her foster home. These items have supported her confidence and helped her settle beautifully.

Sweet, gentle Dobie (third photo) has made wonderful progress in foster care. The grant provided sturdy feeding dishes and sensory enrichment toys that keep him comfortable and active. These tools have helped reduce stress and support his daily routine while he prepares for his forever family.
