Burlington Animal Services (BAS): COVID-19 Operation Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Staff safety is a huge concern since the animals can't be helped without healthy staff; therefore, we used grant funds to purchase a few items for staff safety. Funds used for staff protection are gloves, masks, gowns, and cleaning products such as Rescue.

Funds also directly impacted pets whose owners had been hospitalized due to Covid. BAS provided those pets with vaccinations and care by temporarily boarding them while the owners recovered from their sickness.

Thank you to the Petfinder Foundation! We were able to use grant funds for the safety of our staff, which helped us keep up with the demand to take care of the animals in the community. Approximately 15 staffers (animal care, field officers, vet technicians, and veterinarians) were assisted with needed masks and gowns. Approximately 190 animals benefited from the use of cleaning supplies, gloves, and vaccinations during intake into the shelter or during their stay at the shelter.

We were also able to take in four dogs and two cats whose owners were directly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Attached are photos of the animals that we were able to help. Their owners were sick and had to be hospitalized due to Covid-19. We were able to give the animals temporary shelter and provide vaccinations and care during their owners' hospitalizations with the remainder of the grant funds.

The four dogs were returned to their original owner, while the two cats were rehomed due to the ongoing medical concerns of their owner. The family was very appreciative of this assistance they received from BAS, facilitated by the Petfinder Foundation.

We were able to board six animals belonging to one family, mentioned above, affected by Covid-19. Boarding costs were supplemented with the help of this grant funding and vaccinations were given to all six animals. Rabies, FVRCP, DHLPP, bordetella, Pyrantel (dewormer), and flea treatments such as Vectra or Frontline were administered.

The four dogs were returned to their original owner, while the two cats were rehomed due to the ongoing medical concerns of their owner. The family was very appreciative of this assistance they received from BAS, facilitated by the Petfinder Foundation!
