Nebraska Humane Society (NHS): Orvis Dog Enrichment Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Grant funds were used to purchase enrichment toys and treats for NHS dogs. Specifically, this included licking-mat sets, nibble feeder balls, squeak and treat toys, and high-value treats. All funds ($1,000) were fully expended as described in the grant application and in the grant agreement.

Enrichment is so important for animals in shelters to lessen their stress and anxiety. These tools keep the dogs busy mentally and physically, which is critical to helping them until they find their forever homes via adoption. A dog who is stressed may display behaviors (jumping, pacing, excessive licking) that are not appealing to potential adopters and that can lengthen the dog's shelter stay. Longer stays stretch shelter resources and staff's capacity. Enrichment is a winning solution. We are very grateful for your interest and investment in our live-saving work. Thank you so much!

Bruno (first photo), a 7-year old boxer mix, came to NHS in November 2020 for what became a six-month stay. During this time, he was adopted and returned twice before his final adoption on May 8. The enrichment items he received between walks and playgroups and outings were vital in keeping him from becoming overly anxious.
