Purrfect Catpanion: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

We were able to use the grant to offer reduced adoption fees for our hard-to-adopt rescues, some of whom had been with us in foster care for over a year with no interest or applications.

Having the grant allowed us to market them in a different way, to help them stand out from the sea of kittens that adopters currently see when looking to adopt. We were able to remove another barrier to adoption for these very deserving souls.

How many pets did this grant help?

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Smokey, our miracle 8-year-old FIV+ baby, was picked up about two years ago, living outside with a big wound on his head. He received a lot of veterinary care to get his wound healed and closed. Through it all, he was a darling and his sweetness never dwindled.

He struggled with breathing issues and with his wound taking longer than usual, requiring three rounds of restitching to heal. But he made it! His foster/rescuer worked so hard to nurse him back to health, and how could you not when he was SO sweet and deserving of kindness?

After his wound was healed and he went up for adoption, we couldn’t understand why no one ever seemed interested. He received no applications and, even though people loved him at adoption events, it never materialized into an adoption.

Our sweet Smokey was finally given a chance when an approved adopter fell in love with him. We were able to waive Smokey’s adoption fee to give the adopter peace of mind: He could use what he would have spent on the fee to take Smokey to his vet to clear up any doubts about his health status.

Smokey is now a happy, loved boy in his forever home with his adopter thanks to the opportunity this grant gave him: His adopter could see past a bill and instead focus on the sweet, loving boy in front of him.
