Jefferson County SPCA: Dog Field Trip/Short-Term Fostering Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
The Dog Field Trips Grant has had a meaningful impact on both the Jefferson County SPCA and the dogs in our care by providing the equipment needed to safely launch and expand our Doggy Day Out program. Grant funding allowed us to purchase "Adopt Me" vests, leash wraps, front-clip walking harnesses, car safety harnesses, and sanitation supplies, giving our staff and volunteers the tools necessary to transport and handle shelter dogs safely while increasing their visibility within the community.
With this equipment, our dogs have been able to participate in scheduled adoption event field trips and community outings where potential adopters can interact with them outside of the shelter environment. The "Adopt Me" vests and leash wraps help start conversations with members of the public, while the safety equipment ensures that every outing is both enjoyable and secure for the dogs, volunteers, and community.
These field trips have provided significant enrichment for participating dogs. Recently, dogs including Remy, Nala, Pudge, Louis, and Houdini enjoyed adventures along the Black River Trail, car rides, treat stops, and time exploring new environments. These experiences help reduce kennel stress, build confidence, and allow the dogs to express their true personalities in ways that are often difficult to see inside the shelter.
The program has also strengthened our adoption efforts by giving community members the opportunity to meet our dogs in natural settings. Every outing increases positive exposure for our adoptable dogs and creates meaningful opportunities for conversations about adoption. By helping our dogs feel more relaxed, confident, and visible, this grant has improved both their quality of life while in our care and their chances of finding permanent, loving homes.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.
The Doggy Day Out program has already made a significant difference for many of the dogs in our care by giving them opportunities to leave the shelter, experience new environments, and connect with potential adopters in a relaxed setting.
One of our greatest success stories is Kirk. During one of his Doggy Day Out adventures, he met the people who would eventually become his family. They saw him while he was out in the community wearing his “Adopt Me” gear and immediately expressed interest in adopting him.
Although the adoption process took a couple of weeks to complete, they remained committed, and Kirk ultimately found his forever home because of the exposure he received through the program.
Another remarkable success is Luna, one of our long-term shelter residents. Luna needed time to build trust with people, and the Doggy Day Out program made that possible.
A potential adopter began taking Luna on daily walks for nearly a month, allowing them to develop a strong bond while the adopter learned about Luna’s personality outside the shelter. As their relationship grew, he introduced Luna to his wife and daughter, and eventually to his own dogs.
After a successful one-week foster stay in the home, the family officially adopted Luna. Without the flexibility and enrichment opportunities provided through this program, Luna’s adoption may not have been possible.
In addition to volunteer participants, staff members regularly take dogs out for enrichment, and some even spend their days off taking shelter dogs on adventures. These outings include walks on the Black River Trail, car rides, visits for pup cups, and other excursions beyond the shelter.
Every trip not only provides much-needed enrichment and stress-relief for the dogs but also allows our staff and volunteers to learn more about each dog’s personality, behavior, and preferences. This information helps us better match dogs with adopters and increases their chances of finding the right forever home.
