Vinita Pound: Dog Field Trip/Short-Term Fostering Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

This grant helped our organization by getting further connected to our community. It was amazing to reach those people who wanted to help a shelter animal but not in your typical way. We saw a growth in the number of volunteers who wanted to take a dog or two on a small little trip through town. Not only did this help get our shelter animals seen more by potential adopters but it also helped by reducing the stress of the shelter animals. The dogs who have gone on the trips have started to learn basic leash training, as well as other commands!

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Penelope is a long-term dog here at the shelter. We are unsure what past she has had and the things she has endured. Whatever it was, it wasn’t something good, as she is very fearful of new people. We have battled with the thought of euthanizing Penelope, as we worry about her quality of life at times here at the shelter.

With this grant and the amazing new volunteers here at the shelter, Penelope has slowly started to come out of her shell. She’s bright and more receptive to newcomers. We have a long way to go; however, this grant has given us, as well as Penelope, hope for her future.

Meet Penelope here.
