House of the Cat: Emergency Medical Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
This grant provided substantial financial assistance for a cat named Bernie who was hospitalized in the ICU with mycoplasma shortly after being trapped outside. Bernie needed two blood transfusions to survive, but made it out on the other side of his illness and is now available for adoption!
His total hospital bill was around $7,000 and the $2,000 awarded by the Petfinder Foundation helped us pay off a substantial portion of that expense. Because of that grant, we were able to continue helping cats in need without having to pause our program due to funding.
We are so grateful!

This grant specifically helped pay Bernie’s hospitalization bill, but because of that, it had a domino effect and helped us continue our operations without such a large financial strain.
Bernie was found on the streets just before the first large winter storm we had. Once he was trapped and brought inside, it was discovered he was not eating. Lab work at a primary vet revealed nearly fatal blood counts, so we stepped in to help and had him brought to one of our partnering 24/7 hospitals for immediate care in the ICU.
There, it was discovered that he was suffering from mycoplasma and needed two blood transfusions to survive. It was touch-and-go, but he made it and has now made a full recovery! He has turned out to be the sweetest guy and is now looking for his forever home!
