Animal Protectors of Allegheny Valley: Senior Pet Adoption Assistance Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Funding was used to reimburse the adoption fee, medication, and veterinary visits for Candy, one of our senior residents who was adopted out in October.

This grant allowed us to provide financial assistance to the adopter of one of our shelter’s oldest and longest-staying residents, Candy. Candy is FIV-positive, but can still have a healthy, happy, and normal life with proper vet care and medication. She is also hard of hearing.

How many pets did this grant help?

One senior cat

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Candy is a sweet senior girl, about 10 years old. Candy was our longest-staying resident and was with us from December 2020 through October 2021 (287 days!). Her previous owner, sadly, passed away in the fall of 2020.

Candy spent the next few months living on the streets until she was rescued and brought to us. She was very shy and in poor shape, but soon made a real turnaround! Her coat became much healthier, and she could be quite the chatterbox, especially around meal time!

Candy isn’t a huge fan of other cats and mostly kept to herself around them. We thought she could co-exist with other cats as long as there was enough room to keep everyone happy, and that’s exactly the kind of home she was able to go to.

Her adopters have converted their home to accommodate many animals and their special needs. We were so happy to see her finally adopted into such a perfect situation.
