Heavenly Paws Animal Shelter, Inc.: COVID-19 Operation Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

We received a 2020 COVID-19 grant in the amount of $750. The intent was to use any awarded funds for cats who had to be brought back into foster care, as the adoption centers we use shut down. This originally was going to help support the additional cats in foster care with the extra food, litter, and any medications needed. We ended up using these funds on saving one special cat who had more than $3,000 in veterinary bills.

The funds were used to assist with Martha’s veterinary bills when she needed surgery. We were able to have peace of mind knowing that, with this grant, Martha could have her surgery, and we knew we could raise the remainder of the funds. She is such a sweetheart and we are so happy that we were able to save her with the assistance of this grant.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Poor Martha, a sweet, sassy 1- to 3-year-old calico who’d been found outside, was adopted twice within a month and returned both times. Both times she was returned were no fault of her own, it just wasn’t a good fit in the home. While in foster care, it came to our attention that her five-week-old spay incision had opened back up, so she was taken to the veterinary ER.

There they found that it was a piece of omentum (the fatty layer of tissue in the abdomen). She had her surgery and has made a smooth recovery. The funds received from the Petfinder Foundation assisted greatly in her vet bills and allowed us to save this sweet girl, who has now been adopted and is in her forever home!
