Little Paws Dachshund Rescue: Emergency Medical Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

This grant helped us provide Annabelle with the emergency medical care she so desperately needed. We often do not know what shape dogs will be in when we commit to their care, and Annabelle was no different.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Annabelle was found wandering on the side of a county road with a baseball-sized mass on her chest. A good Samaritan brought her in to a local shelter that then called us to see if we could help because they were unable to provide her the care she desperately needed.

LPDR stepped in and got her to the veterinarian immediately. After doing Annabelle’s bloodwork and giving her an initial exam, the medical care team and LPDR determined that surgery to remove the mass was the best option.

The surgery went well and they were able to remove the mass with good margins. The mass was then sent off for additional testing, and the pathology report indicated that the mass was malignant myoepithelioma, a rare form of cancer found in the mammary tissue.

Annabelle is now recovering in one of our wonderful foster homes and we are monitoring her to ensure that there are no additional growths before we help her find her forever home!
