Lucks Rescue, Inc.: Dog Enrichment Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The Petfinder Foundation Dog Enrichment Grant directly improved the emotional well-being of the dogs in our care by allowing us to provide enrichment toys to both shelter dogs and dogs placed in foster homes. For many of these dogs, this was the first time they had ever experienced a toy. These items play a critical role in helping dogs decompress in stressful shelter environments and begin to relax and open up in foster homes.

In the shelter, enrichment toys help dogs cope with confinement, noise, and uncertainty by providing positive mental stimulation and a sense of comfort. The toys give dogs a constructive outlet for stress and anxiety, often leading to calmer behavior and improved overall demeanors.

In foster homes, toys help dogs feel safer and more confident as they adjust to living in a home environment. Having access to toys encourages natural behaviors such as play, exploration, and problem-solving, allowing dogs to express themselves and build trust with their caregivers. For many dogs, this is a significant step in learning how to be a companion animal.

Although these dogs were ultimately transported north for adoption, the enrichment provided through this grant was essential in preparing them for successful transitions. By helping dogs decompress and emotionally stabilize, the toys support smoother adjustments during transport and help set the foundation for successful placement in permanent homes.

How many pets did this grant help?

This grant will help hundreds of dogs throughout the calendar year. The enrichment toys are continuously rotated among incoming dogs at the shelter and distributed to our network of foster homes, allowing a large number of dogs to benefit from them over time. Because the toys are reused and shared as dogs move through the program, they provide ongoing enrichment to each new dog entering our care. By being passed along to constant foster parents and remaining available at the shelter, these toys ensure that every incoming dog has access to enrichment that supports decompression, emotional well-being, and positive behavioral development. This allows the impact of the grant to extend far beyond a single group of dogs and continue helping hundreds of dogs as they pass through our organization over the year.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Georgia’s (first three photos) story shows just how powerful enrichment can be for dogs who have experienced severe trauma. Georgia came into our care about a year ago after suffering a frightening and traumatic incident that left her both physically injured and emotionally shut down. When she first arrived at the shelter, she was overwhelmed and fearful, spending more than three months unable to leave her safe space.

Over time, and with consistent care, Georgia has slowly begun to heal — and a big breakthrough came through enrichment toys provided by the Petfinder Foundation Dog Enrichment Grant. For Georgia, toys became a source of comfort and confidence. When an enrichment toy is present, her dog personality truly comes out. She becomes joyful, eager, and engaged in a way we rarely see otherwise.

Georgia is still slow to trust humans, but toys help bridge that gap by giving her something familiar and positive to focus on. Even more meaningfully, she has begun sharing toys with other dogs, a huge sign of progress for a dog who was once completely shut down. This social behavior shows increased confidence, emotional safety, and trust in her environment.

Although Georgia has not yet been adopted due to her special behavioral needs, the enrichment toys have been life-changing for her. They have allowed her to decompress, build confidence, and show her true colors — giving us hope that, in time, she will be ready for the right home. Her progress is a powerful example of how this grant directly improves quality of life and emotional healing for dogs in our care.

Meet Georgia here.
