McKamey Animal Center: Cat Enrichment Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

We used your generous grant funding to purchase cardboard cat scratchers to promote stress relief and enrichment for the cats and kittens in our care. We were able to order a large quantity of scratchers, break them down into personalized sizes, and adhere them to each cat kennel. We even sprinkled catnip on some of them and the cats and kittens instantly got to work. It was very clear how much the stress relief of scratching was needed. We plan to utilize the remaining scratchers until we run out. Thank you for your support of this enrichment initiative.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Little Auron was found with his siblings as an underweight neonate, clinging on to life.

Auron went to foster care when he first arrived to MAC, and once big enough was returned to the Center to find his forever home.

At such a young age, kittens are very susceptible to the effects of chronic shelter stress. With the cardboard cat scratchers purchased through the funding from the Petfinder Foundation, Auron was one of the lucky kittens in our care who got his own personalized scratcher to utilize.

As soon as we closed his kennel door, he went to the scratcher, sniffed and rubbed all over it and immediately began scratching, playing and decompressing. We believe that, because of this and his sweet demeanor, he was able to fully relax and show off his true personality to potential adopters.

Auron was adopted within a matter of days, and we even sent his little scratcher with him! Without the support of enrichment, Auron could have developed into a shut-down, scared, and unfriendly cat within the shelter. Thank you for helping us to place Auron with a loving family by providing enrichment to him!
