Missy's Haven: Build-A-Bear Youth Humane Education Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

During our event on March 5, we invited school-age kids to join us in reading Peanuts stories to the pups while they waited to be adopted. We had coloring books, blankets, and educational material for them to take home and learn the responsibility of approaching dogs, and the do's and don't towards dogs.

We are planning an education and reunion event during the monthly of July of past and current pets adopted here at MHCR. The kids will read stories to our senior dogs in hospice showing them they can still be loved. We will be teaching how to approach and treat dogs and that they are part of the family. Part of our grant contributed towards our adoption trailer, which allows us to reach the public at different events, allowing us to have space and material available for the kids to join us in educational outreach.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Woody (first photo) is a deaf poodle who was adopted by a loving family willing to give him a second chance. He now lives with a little girl and boy and their grandparents and joins in as they are read a bedtime story each evening before bed. They tell us: “Woody is adapting very well. He just jumped on my granddaughter’s bed to hear the story James was reading. We love him and he fits in well.”
