Safe Haven Cat Sanctuary: Disaster Response and Recovery Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Insulation for the shelter/feeding station and a Generac generator

Additional insulation will help ensure that the temperature inside the shelter/feeding station can be maintained during severe weather conditions. The purchase of the generator will ensure that, regardless of the weather emergency, whether heat or cold, there will always be a back-up source of power to keep the cats safe and warm, or cool.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Due to her age (19) and medical conditions, Bobbi (first photo) is a permanent resident of the Sanctuary and confined to a private suite within the shelter. She has been a resident here for the past 2 1/2 years and was rescued after spending her life living on the streets.

Bobbi sought refuge under a local tavern and over the years developed a severe case of stomatitis. One morning, when I went to feed her, and after not seeing her for several months, she was sitting on the porch of a nearby business (second photo). It was very apparent that she was in dire condition and required immediate trapping in order to be seen by a vet.

After I rescued her, she underwent a series of three surgeries to remove all of her teeth. She is not fond of other cats; therefore, the private indoor quarters allows her to live out her remaining years in safety, with a 24/7 supply of food, fresh water, a soft chair to sleep in and people to love her.

The shelter here is a last chance for hard-to-place kitties who have been shunned by previous adopters or left outdoors to fend for themselves. We have a special relationship with these cats; they receive top-notch veterinary care and get to enjoy being cats in a safe, healthy environment. Our being able to add additional insulation to the two private suites, the large loft, the transition area, and the feeding station means that the cats have a place where they can truly feel at home.
