Second Chance Pets: Senior Pet Adoption Assistance Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Second Chance Pets applied for this grant hoping that adoption assistance funds from the Petfinder Foundation will help us find a quality home for Lexie, a sweet special-needs senior dog who has been in SCP foster care for more than 300 days with, sadly, no real adoption interest.

Finding adopters willing to open their hearts and home to a senior pet is difficult in general, and Lexie’s situation is complicated by other health conditions, as she is sight-impaired and has problems with her skin and ears. We hope the added incentive of these grant funds to assist with her future medical care will attract just the right family to give sweet Lexie the forever home she truly deserves.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Lexie is 10+ years old and was dumped on the streets at some point in her life. Based on her very poor condition, she must have been living outside for quite a while before being rescued in March 2025.

SCP made sure she received much-needed medical treatment and her kind foster parents provided lots of love to help her feel better. Now she just needs an adoptive family to find her and fall in love.

She is vision-impaired but gets around well, she loves people and is gentle, calm, quiet, friendly as can be, and does great with other dogs.

Since this grant was awarded, Lexie has dealt with a couple of additional medical issues, testing positive for heartworms at her six-month recheck (she is being treated with Proheart injections due to her age) and being treated for another ear infection.

Through it all, she sits patiently at our weekly adoption events and is happy to receive pets and kind words from anyone who pauses by her cage, hoping they’ll think she’s “the one.” Lexie is safe with SCP for however long it takes, but we look forward to seeing her in a forever home thanks to the incentive of assistance from this generous grant.
