Color Country Animal Welfare: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
With half-price adoption fees, the Kia Pet Adoption Grant allowed Color Country Animal Welfare to adopt pets into their forever homes more quickly than would otherwise have happened. We advertised our reduced adoption fees in our local newspaper, on our website, and on Facebook, giving a big thank-you to Kia and the Petfinder Foundation.
Our shelter is relatively small, with a capacity for seven dogs and 16 cats, so we can fill up rather quickly. In the three months that we were able to offer reduced adoption fees, we never reached capacity and therefore never had to turn away stray or abandoned animals. A total of 11 dogs and eight cats were adopted during our discounted adoption campaign.
How many pets did this grant help?
19 (11 dogs and eight cats)
Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.
When Clarice arrived at the Color Country Animal Welfare (CCAW) shelter she was thin, very wary of everyone, and didn’t interact well with other dogs or cats.
It took her months to adjust to her new surroundings and to trust people. With diligent work by CCAW’s staff, volunteers, and fosters, she transformed into a trusting, friendly dog who loved to give people “hugs;” she also began playing with other dogs.
One of CCAW’s volunteers, Eric, took a special liking to Clarice and they formed a tight bond. Unfortunately, Eric took a job in Colorado and wasn’t able to find an apartment that allowed dogs.
Eric would come visit Clarice at the shelter when he could (the first photo shows one of their happy reunions). Friends of his agreed to foster Clarice for several months.
After eight months, Eric found an apartment that would take dogs, and he came back to CCAW and adopted Clarice. She spent a total of 390 days in the care of CCAW, some of that time in foster care.
