Pope Memorial Frontier Animal Shelter, Inc.: Emergency Medical Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
Pope Memorial Frontier Animal Shelter took in a 3.5-year-old corgi who was surrendered because her owner couldn't afford the vet care to take care of her extensive mouth problems. The corgi, named Jemma, was in pain and struggling to eat. Her teeth were in such poor condition that they actually had holes in them.
In order for our shelter to provide the necessary surgery, we incurred additional medical expenses that were outside of our usual expenses for spaying/neutering, vaccinating, and routine treatments. In light of the expenses, we applied for an Emergency Medical Grant from the Petfinder Foundation to help cover the costs. Pope Memorial Frontier Animal Shelter was APPROVED and Jemma's dental surgery, which required 17 teeth extractions, was almost fully covered. Jemma was pain-free, likely for the first time in years.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.
At just three and a half years old, Jemma had already had four pregnancies. Due to poor nutrition and being overbred, Jemma had literal holes in her teeth and required extensive dental surgery in order to be able to eat without pain.
Her owner couldn’t afford the vet care to take care of Jemma’s extensive mouth problems, but didn’t want to give her back to the breeder because the breeder said “I’ll have to breed her one more time to cover the cost” when she was contacted about the dog’s mouth.
We made a promise to Jemma that she would never be bred again and that all her medical needs would be fully addressed. With the help of the Petfinder Foundation’s Emergency Medical Grant, Jemma had a successful dental surgery and is now a brand-new dog with a brand-new smile. Jemma’s future also now includes a pending adoption!
