Mower County Humane Society: Dog Enrichment Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
The Petfinder Foundation's Dog Enrichment Grant provided the Mower County Humane Society with six new Kuranda pet beds. With the growing number of abandoned or surrendered dogs, our shelter needed additional pet beds. Many of our current pet beds were beginning to show wear and becoming unsafe for our dogs to use. This grant allowed us to purchase new beds that replaced our worn ones and provided enough that each dog in our care could be provided with a sturdy dog bed.
How many pets did this grant help?
More than 100 dogs will benefit from this grant. We purchased six new Kuranda beds that dogs in our care will sleep on while in our care.
Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.
Sometimes it takes a dog at our shelter a little bit longer to find a home. We don’t believe in rushing a dog into an adoption situation too soon and there are no expiration dates. Lizzy (first photo) is a perfect example of this.
She came into our shelter in December 2019 after the tragic death of her young owner. The young man’s widow could not care for Lizzy and made the difficult decision to surrender her. Lizzy was traumatized by this, as she had been devoted to her person. Because she was so shy and shut down, we did not place her up for adoption right away. In fact, it was a couple of years before she was truly ready.
During this time, our dedicated volunteers worked with her, taking their time and giving her extra attention. Lizzy was incredibly smart and loved the company of other dogs. She became known for her fun antics in the outside run yards and her love of playing in the pools during the summer (second photo).
Lizzy was, however, still pretty shy with new people outside of the shelter, which made it a little harder to find her a home. We were ecstatic when she was adopted by one of our regular volunteers and her family. Getting to go home with a familiar person was icing on the cake for Lizzy.
Lizzy now has two canine buddies and a fenced yard to romp in, pools included. Her new family reports that she loves to go for long walks and is totally content to stay comfy and cozy all night in bed. It took more than four years, but Lizzy received her happy ending.
Lizzy benefited from the Petfinder Foundation Dog Enrichment Grant that was awarded to Mower County Humane Society. Lizzy received a Kuranda bed that was purchased through this grant to use in her kennel while she was in our care.
