Eagle County Animal Shelter: KONG Toys Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

We loved receiving all the KONG toys! Not only did these toys give us some options for our heavy chewers, but we were able to gift some of them to our adopters so they went away with good, quality toys for their new pups to enjoy.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

One of our recent adoptions, Zeus (first photo), went home with two of the KONG toys we received. He was a tough case, as he had come to our shelter as a surrender and was completely shut down and scared.

He went into a foster home with a wonderful person named Heather and started to come out of his shell and shine. His only downfall was that he was nervous and had some separation anxiety.

We gave Heather the KONG toys and told her to put some peanut butter in the holes and freeze the toys. Once they were frozen, she would give the toys to Zeus. Zeus loved them and would spend time working on getting the peanut butter out of the toys. This activity helped his anxiety and allowed him a chance to relax and enjoy his downtime.

Heather would give him the toy daily and Zeus would patiently wait for his treat every day. The consistency really helped him calm down and Heather just recently adopted him (second photo)!
