Second Chance Cats of West Michigan: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
Our rescue used grant funds to waive the adoption fee for the second animal when two cats were adopted by the same family. We understand there are costs associated with adopting a new pet or pets and wanted to help offset those expenses. Adopters weren't told ahead of time that one adoption fee would be waived using the Petfinder Foundation Kia grant, so it was always a happy surprise and in many cases they gave us extra money as a donation to further help our rescue. Grant funds were also used in some special cases to waive the adoption fee for cats who had health issues or a particularly tragic backstory; one of these instances is highlighted below.

Catacomb came to our rescue on a chilly Saturday in early March. His finder was driving through a local cemetery on her way to work and spotted a cat carrier. When she investigated, she found a scared cat inside, along with urine and feces that indicated he had been stuck in there for at least a day or two, during nights that got down into the 20s.
Catacomb was a thin, longhaired tabby estimated to be 8-10 years old and very sweet. He had to have several teeth removed and, once that was done, he was much more comfortable and able to put on some much-needed weight.
We highlighted his tragic story on social media and a couple who had adopted from our rescue previously applied to adopt him. We waived the adoption fee for Catacomb using the Petfinder Foundation Kia grant and sent him to his forever home, where he will never be cold and hungry again!
