Houston Humane Society: Disaster Response and Recovery Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
During the hurricane and flood season this year, we relied heavily on funding from our partner organizations as well as our supporters who donated to Houston Humane Society. The generous grant of $3,000 from the Petfinder Foundation helped us in setting our rescue efforts in motion.
When catastrophic flooding devastated communities across the Hill Country, shelters in the region were experiencing an overwhelming number of displaced pets in need of urgent care. To help create space for an expected influx of displaced animals, Houston Humane Society welcomed 26 dogs affected by Texas Hill Country floods.
As part of our onboarding protocols, we ensured that all the pets were immediately provided veterinary care, nutritious meals, and a loving and caring environment with lots of enrichment activities. These measures helped in the overall healing process of these dogs who had lost their families. Out of these dogs, most of them have been adopted.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.
Meet Yogi. He was one of 26 dogs that came to us a few days after the Hill Country floods. Despite everything, he was affectionate and playful. Yogi was featured on the local TV news station KPRC, where he was a big hit with staff and viewers.
Since then, Yogi has been adopted by a couple, Kathy and Mike, who’ve renamed him Jack. He’s their only dog, and his new family says, “We are so enjoying Jack. He loves to go for walks, and he loves to run. He sleeps in our bed and we’re giving him so much love and attention and he loves it.”
