Cat Care Society: Cat Enrichment Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Thanks to the generous $500 grant, Cat Care Society purchased six Kuranda cat towers to enhance enrichment and well-being for the 100+ cats in our free-roaming shelter. These durable towers provide essential vertical space, allowing cats to climb, perch, and relax safely. For cats adjusting to shelter life, recovering from medical treatment, or living with chronic conditions, access to elevated resting spots reduces stress and promotes natural behaviors that support both health and adoptability.

Our limited vertical space has long been a challenge; existing shelves are constantly in use, and temporary solutions can’t meet the needs of our large feline population. The new Kuranda towers offer a lasting improvement, ensuring that every cat can find a comfortable place to rest and observe. Studies show that enrichment like this can reduce stress hormones by up to 30% and improve adoption rates by 20%.

Founded in 1981, Cat Care Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the care and placement of cats often considered “unadoptable,” including seniors and those with chronic health issues. This grant directly supports our mission to provide a calm, enriched environment where every cat can thrive — physically, emotionally, and socially.

We are deeply grateful for this support, which has created lasting benefits for the cats in our care today and for thousands more in the years to come.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

When one of our lively litter of kittens — Frodo, Pippin, Merry, Bilbo, Sam, and Rosie — arrived at Cat Care Society, they were shy, wobbly, and still learning to navigate their world. The addition of the Kuranda Cat Towers had an immediate impact on their growth and development. Climbing and exploring the elevated platforms strengthened their muscles, improved coordination, and encouraged natural feline behaviors like perching and surveying their surroundings. From their high vantage points, they could observe activity in the shelter and out the window, which helped them build confidence and curiosity.

The towers also allowed each kitten to show off their unique personalities to potential adopters. Being visible and active on the towers helped them become more social, approachable, and ready for adoption, all while keeping them safely above litter and food messes!

Thanks to the Kurunda cat towers, these kittens thrived physically, emotionally, and socially and, one by one, they found loving homes. Notably, adoption fees from our kittens help support our senior and special-needs cats, making the towers a lasting benefit for the entire shelter community.
