CARE Humane Society: Play Pet Beds Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The P.L.A.Y. Pet Beds Grant has made a meaningful difference in the lives of the animals in our care. These beds have provided our dogs with much-needed comfort, warmth, and a sense of security in what can often be a stressful and unfamiliar environment. Whether the dogs are in the shelter or in foster homes, having a soft place to rest helps reduce their anxiety and improve their overall well-being. We’ve even seen that dogs who appear more relaxed and content are more likely to connect with potential adopters, making these beds a valuable part of our adoption success. We are incredibly grateful for this support and the positive impact it has had on both our animals and our organization.

How many pets did this grant help?

50-100

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Sharkie (first photo) was a scared, skinny little puppy when he arrived at the shelter. He was riddled with parasites and fleas and had painful sores on his tail. His health was poor, and he clearly hadn’t known comfort or care. While puppies are typically adopted quickly, Sharkie stayed with CARE for over a month — much longer than others his age. He watched many of his playgroup friends leave with new families, and we could almost see him wondering why no one was picking him.

Thanks to the P.L.A.Y. Pet Beds Grant, Sharkie had a warm, safe, and cozy place to rest during his recovery and wait. His bed became his little sanctuary — a source of comfort in an uncertain time. Eventually, Sharkie’s perfect match came along: a young man from Florida who drove nearly four hours to Alabama just to adopt him.

Now Sharkie is thriving in a loving home. This grant helped give Sharkie the time and comfort he needed to heal and be ready for his forever family — and we are so grateful for that.

Vidia (second photo) was originally adopted from CARE Humane Society in 2021 as a young puppy. Sadly, due to recent financial struggles, her owner made the difficult decision to surrender her back to us.

Now older and wiser, Vidia returned to the shelter in much worse condition than when she left. She came back with heartworm disease, intestinal parasites, severely overgrown nails, and a dirty, neglected coat. It was both shocking and heartbreaking to see such a gentle, loving soul in this state.

Despite everything, Vidia remains incredibly sweet. She’s shy and scared, but all she truly wants is love, affection, and a safe place to rest and heal. Thanks to the P.L.A.Y. Pet Beds Grant, Vidia now has a clean, soft bed to call her own — a small but powerful comfort that gives her dignity in a time of need. This grant has given her more than just a place to sleep — it’s given her the chance to feel safe, valued, and loved again.

Vidia is still waiting for her forever home. You can meet Vidia here.

Tammy (third photo) arrived at CARE Humane Society on Aug. 7, 2025. When we scanned her for a microchip and found one, we were hopeful that her owner would come for her. Sadly, that hope was short-lived. Her owner made the heartbreaking decision not to reclaim her, and Tammy was left to wait out her seven-day stray hold before becoming available for adoption.

Tammy spent about 15 days in the shelter before a kind and compassionate foster opened their home to her. That time in foster care gave Tammy exactly what she needed — a chance to relax, heal, and feel loved again. When Tammy returned to the shelter, a cozy P.L.A.Y. Pet Bed was waiting for her in her kennel. She immediately curled up, cuddled in (her favorite thing to do), and seemed to understand that even though she wasn’t in a home, she was still safe and cared for. Thanks to this grant, dogs like Tammy are given not just comfort, but dignity and peace during uncertain times.

Perri (fourth photo) came to CARE Humane with her sisters — Kerry, Darcy, Sloan, and Penny — after their owner’s health began to decline. All five girls were scared and defensive, clearly shaken and heartbroken after being uprooted from the only home they had ever known. Over time, Kerry, Darcy, and Sloan each found their forever families. Tragically, Penny passed away from complications related to heartworm disease before we were able to begin her treatment.

Perri is the last of her sisters still with us. After 173 days, she continues to wait patiently for her perfect match. Despite her long stay, Perri remains hopeful and loving. She’s become our official front-desk greeter, welcoming every visitor with a wagging tail and an enthusiastic play bow. While she can be cautious around new men, she warms up quickly once she knows she’s safe. Perri has a charming habit of rubbing against your legs like a cat and loves to stretch out her back legs when she’s relaxing.

Thanks to the P.L.A.Y. Pet Beds Grant, Perri has had a soft, safe place to rest her head during this difficult chapter. Her bed has provided comfort, stability, and a sense of peace as she learns to trust and love again. We know her forever home is out there, and in the meantime, she’s surrounded by love and support.
