P.A.W.S. (Pound Animals Worth Saving) Fur the Cause: Dog Enrichment Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
This grant allowed us to fulfill our original plan of purchasing toys, outdoor play toys, comfortable beds, and treats with treat-dispensing toys to enrich the lives of the dogs in our care. The items were distributed among our foster homes, creating a more stimulating and comfortable environment for 45 dogs during the grant period, with many more dogs expected to benefit over time as durable items are reused.
The toys and treat-dispensing feeders provide mental stimulation and entertainment, helping to alleviate boredom and reduce stress-related behaviors. Outdoor play toys encourage physical activity, while comfortable beds give our dogs a secure, restful place to sleep. This combination of enrichment tools improved behavior, temperament, and overall well-being, making our dogs more appealing to potential adopters and shortening their time in care.
Dogs like Chappy, Darla, Toto, Lisa, and Koopa thrived with these resources, becoming more relaxed, engaged, and ready for adoption. This grant not only enhanced the daily quality of life for our dogs but also supported our mission as a 100% foster-based, donation-funded rescue to save lives and prepare each dog for a successful transition into a loving forever home.
How many pets did this grant help?
45 dogs in our immediate care will directly benefit this year, and more than 100 additional dogs will benefit over time as durable items like beds and toys are reused with new intakes.
Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.
Thanks to this grant, Toto (first photo), a timid 5-month-old border collie mix, blossomed into a new pup in just a few short weeks. When he first came to us, he was shy and unsure of the world. The interactive toys, soft Lamb Chop plushies, squeaky toys, tug toys, and agility equipment we were able to purchase with this funding, gave him a safe, fun way to explore, build confidence, and burn off energy. Before long, Toto was greeting visitors with a happy wag and showing off his playful side, which helped him quickly win the heart of an active family who made him their own.
The same enrichment items also made a difference for Chappy, Darla, Lisa, and Koopa, each of whom benefited in their own way — from easing anxiety with a cozy bed to channeling playful energy into positive behaviors.
Thanks to this grant, all five of these dogs, and 40 others in our care during the grant period, enjoyed a higher quality of life, less stress, and greater adoption readiness. Every one of them found a forever home, and the durable items funded will continue to help many more dogs in the future.
