Meant 2B Loved Pet Rescue Society: Purina Canada Happy Paws & Hearts Operation Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
We are so grateful for the Purina Canada Happy Paws & Hearts Operation Grant. As a small, volunteer-run, foster-based non-profit, we have felt the impact of higher costs for food and supplies, as well as veterinary care. As our communities are also feeling the pinch, the increased cost of living is also having an impact on our donations.
Funds used from this grant will ensure dogs and cats in our care will have nutritious food, toys, and supplies for months to come. Kittens will have safer, dust-free litter, reducing any negative impact on their tiny, vulnerable lungs.
Perhaps the largest impact from this grant, however, was the assistance with paying for spay and neuter surgeries of some of our animals. Especially in the case of cats, spay/neuter costs us more than we can ask for in adoption fees, so this assistance has provided great relief. Thanks to the generosity of Purina Canada and the Petfinder Foundation, we were also able to cover additional veterinary costs. The payment of veterinary costs (spay/neuter and other medical treatments) for approximately 18 animals was made possible thanks to this incredible grant.
How many pets did this grant help?
18 pets for vet costs; 10-15 more will benefit from food, toys, and supplies.
Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.
Darla, barely more than a kitten herself, was found as a very pregnant stray and came into the care of Meant 2B Loved Pet Rescue Society on April 3, 2025. As we do with all animals who come into our care, we booked her for a veterinary exam the following day. However, Darla had other ideas. Perhaps knowing she was finally safe, she gave birth to six kittens on April 4.
Over the next couple of months, Darla took care of her babies while a Meant 2B Loved foster took care of her. All of her babies, four boys and two girls, and Darla were spayed/neutered thanks to funds from the Purina Canada Happy Paws & Hearts Operations Grant.
Though a loving mom to all her babies, Darla really created a special bond with her baby boy Bruce. Thankfully, a potential adopter saw that bond and, not wanting to break it, adopted both mom and son together.
Two of Darla’s babies remain looking for their forever homes, but we are certain they will be happily with their new families soon.
