Pinky Paws Search & ResQ: Orvis Dog Enrichment Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The Orvis Dog Enrichment Grant allowed Pinky Paws Search & ResQ to provide elevated Kuranda beds for dogs in our rescue program who were recovering from neglect, abandonment, and medical issues. Many of the dogs arriving in our care have spent long periods living outdoors, in shelters, or in unstable environments. Having raised Kuranda beds immediately improves their comfort, giving them a clean, dry place to rest off the ground.

The beds help reduce stress and anxiety by creating a consistent, comfortable resting space for the dogs while they adjust to a safe environment. Elevated beds are especially helpful for dogs recovering from illness or injury because they support joints, improve airflow, and help keep bedding areas clean and sanitary.

For dogs staying with us during rehabilitation and behavioral recovery, the Kuranda beds quickly become a favorite resting place. They help create calmer kennel environments and provide enrichment by giving the dogs a defined, comfortable space of their own.

We are incredibly grateful to the Petfinder Foundation and the Orvis Dog Enrichment Grant program for supporting the wellbeing of the dogs in our care. The beds have made a meaningful difference in helping our rescue dogs rest comfortably while they heal and prepare for their future homes.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Natalie (first photo) came to Pinky Paws Search & ResQ after a difficult journey. We rescued her on July 16, 2021, after she had been living loose in the country for 32 days. When we scanned her microchip, we learned that she had been given away twice before, leaving her without the stability and security every dog deserves.

Like many dogs who have experienced uncertainty, Natalie needed time to decompress and rebuild trust once she arrived at the rescue. She initially struggled with being a bit pushy with other dogs, which is common for dogs who have experienced instability. With structure, patience, and consistent training, she has made tremendous progress and now listens well and continues to grow in confidence.

When we later received the Kuranda beds through the Orvis Dog Enrichment Grant, Natalie quickly claimed one as her favorite place to rest. Having a raised bed provided a comfortable, supportive space off the ground where she could relax and observe the activity around her kennel.

The beds have helped create more comfortable resting areas for the dogs in our care and have become an important part of their daily routine. For Natalie, the bed provided a sense of comfort and stability as she continued her rehabilitation and adjustment at the rescue.

We are incredibly grateful to the Petfinder Foundation and the Orvis Dog Enrichment Grant program for helping improve the daily comfort and wellbeing of the dogs in our care.

Meet Natalie here.
