California Bully Rescue: Dog Enrichment Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The Petfinder Foundation Dog Enrichment Grant arrived at exactly the right time for California Bully Rescue. As a foster-based rescue, we are committed to ensuring that dogs transitioning from shelters into foster homes have access to comfort, enrichment, and opportunities to decompress. The grant allowed us to purchase orthopedic and comfort beds, lick mats, snuffle mats, and enrichment toys that were distributed to foster homes caring for dogs with a variety of needs.

Many of the dogs who enter our program come from stressful shelter environments where they have experienced uncertainty, confinement, and, in some cases, neglect. Providing comfortable beds and enrichment activities helps reduce stress, encourages healthy behaviors, and supports a smoother transition into foster care. The enrichment tools purchased through this grant have been used daily to provide mental stimulation, encourage confidence, reduce anxiety, and create positive experiences for dogs adjusting to new environments.

One of the most meaningful impacts of this grant was its support of Edamame and her newborn Bean litter. Edamame entered our care after being pulled from a shelter just as she was giving birth to her four puppies: Pinto Bean, Garbanzo Bean, Mr. Bean, and Lima Bean. Despite having clearly experienced hardship before arriving in rescue, Edamame proved to be a devoted and loving mother, focused entirely on keeping her babies safe.

The enrichment items funded through this grant provided comfort and support during an important stage of the family's development. Lick mats helped provide enrichment and stress relief for Edamame while she cared for her puppies, while the beds and enrichment toys created a safe, comfortable environment for the family to grow and thrive. As the puppies became more mobile and curious, enrichment toys provided opportunities for healthy exploration and age-appropriate stimulation.

Beyond the Bean family, these items have continued to benefit foster dogs throughout our program. Comfortable beds provide a sense of security and rest for dogs recovering from shelter stress, while snuffle mats, lick mats, and enrichment toys help foster families engage dogs in positive activities that promote mental and emotional well-being. These tools are used repeatedly across multiple foster homes and will continue benefiting dogs for years to come.

We are incredibly grateful for the Petfinder Foundation's investment in enrichment and quality-of-life support. The grant has helped us provide comfort, stimulation, and positive experiences for dogs at some of the most vulnerable moments in their lives, ultimately helping them transition successfully from rescue to loving homes.

How many pets did this grant help?

The enrichment items purchased through this grant directly benefited more than 20 dogs during the grant period, including adult foster dogs and the five members of Edamame's Bean family. Because many of the items, including beds, snuffle mats, lick mats, and enrichment toys, are reusable and rotate between foster homes, they will continue to benefit dozens of additional dogs in the future. We anticipate these enrichment resources will positively impact well over 50 dogs over their useful lifespan within our foster program.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

One of the most memorable families impacted by this grant was Edamame and her four puppies, affectionately known as the “Bean Bunch” — Pinto Bean, Garbanzo Bean, Mr. Bean, and Lima Bean.

Edamame entered California Bully Rescue’s care after being pulled from a shelter just as she was giving birth. Despite clearly having experienced hardship before rescue, she immediately proved to be a devoted and attentive mother. Her focus from day one was keeping her puppies safe, fed, and loved.

The Petfinder Foundation Dog Enrichment Grant arrived at the perfect time for this young family. The comfortable beds purchased through the grant gave Edamame a soft, supportive place to rest while nursing and caring for her growing puppies. As any mother of newborns knows, caring for babies around the clock is exhausting, and having a comfortable place to relax and recover helped provide much-needed comfort during those early weeks.

As the puppies began to grow and explore the world around them, the enrichment items quickly became a part of their daily routine. The puppies have discovered the joy of peanut butter-filled Kongs and lick mats, which provide both mental stimulation and positive enrichment experiences. They eagerly investigate new textures, scents, and challenges, helping build confidence and curiosity as they develop.

Now that the puppies are entering the teething stage, they have also begun enjoying age-appropriate chew toys purchased through the grant. These toys provide a safe outlet for natural chewing behaviors while helping soothe sore gums and keeping busy puppy minds engaged. Watching the puppies proudly carry their toys around, explore enrichment activities, and learn through play has been a wonderful reminder of how important these resources are during critical developmental stages.

The enrichment items have benefited Edamame as well. Lick mats provided calming mental stimulation and positive reinforcement opportunities, helping her decompress from the stress of shelter life while continuing to care for her litter. These simple enrichment tools created opportunities for relaxation, engagement, and comfort during a significant transition.

Today, the Bean Bunch is thriving. They are growing stronger, more confident, and more curious every day. While they are still too young to begin their adoption journey, they are receiving the enrichment, comfort, and positive experiences that will help set them up for success as they continue to develop.

Thanks to the Petfinder Foundation Dog Enrichment Grant, this deserving family has been able to experience not just safety, but joy, comfort, learning, and play during some of the most important weeks of their lives.
